Beginning readers often use their knowledge of initial phonemes to guess what a word might be. Children learn early on that this strategy is not going to work with this matching activity. Many of the words are verbs, adjectives, or synonyms, rather than nouns they might predict. The Short & Long Vowel Decoding Match manipulatives assure that students apply vowel pattern rules to decode words.

Students need to know short and long vowel phonemes and spelling patterns prior to working on this matching activity since they must use these to decode the words. Suggestions for teaching the prerequisite skills are included in the guide. Several Reading Manipulatives products develop these skills (SLV Flip Strips, SLV Word Families, Star Blending, SLV Scrambled Sentences).

Since short vowels are more common and tend to be harder to learn, there is one set for each vowel that has mixed short and long vowel phonemes and one with only short vowels. Each set has 16 fun pictures and matching words.

All pieces in a set have a set code on them. A string of a unique graphic character (squares, circles, hearts, etc.) is at the bottom of each card. These are used for sorting and identifying sets. Put the 10 sets in zipper bags. A set title card is included to place in each bag.
